Data backups are an important valuable tool for backing up and storing critical data. As the cost of hard disks is constantly coming down, the attractiveness of using a disk-to-disk backup solution becomes more financially viable. The largest capacity disk drive currently shipping is the Seagate 750GB ST3750640NS Enterprise SATA-II disk drive with a cost per GB of .37p per Gigabyte.

Our disk-to-disk backup solution uses a high-speed disk controller and a high performance RAID array using SCSI or FC to connect to the backup server. The disk-to-disk backup solution is viewed by the backup software to look exactly like a tape library with virtual tape drives and virtual disk slots.

The major benefits of a disk-to-disk backup system are that the backups can be performed much faster and restores occur instantaneously.

As the media tapes are removable any data that is backed up can be stored for safe keeping in the event of data loss. Increasingly legislation is dictating that all data is stored for Data Compliance. By using LTO-3 technology your cost per GB of backing up critical information is 10.5p, this is the cheapest way of storing critical data.

Conclusion
A reliable tape backup system that centralises all data to a tape library or autoloader will greatly enhance an organisations chances of finding the data, reducing the cost of multiple copies of backup software, reduce maintenance costs and servers will be more reliable as they do not have individual tape drives installed!
